IN THE NEWS
On November 4-5, 2017, sixteen law schools participated in the National Veterans Law Moot Court Competition in Washington, DC. The legal problem involved the scanning processes of the US Department of Veterans Affairs and the records of some veterans that are lost or destroyed in the process. The final round of the competition was judged by three sitting United States Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims judges (Judges Michael Allen and Joseph Toth and Senior Judge William Moorman). Three NLSVCC members participated as competitors in the event: Syracuse University College of Law coached by Professor Yelena Duterte, University of Denver Sturm College of Law coached by Professors Tim Franklin and Mike Shea, and Stetson University College of Law coached by Professor Stacey-Rae Simcox and alumna Diana Evans. Professor Hugh McClean, of the University of Baltimore School of Law, judged in the preliminary rounds of the competition. Each team represented their respective Consortium schools professionally and brought their specialized knowledge to the problem. Syracuse’s Ryan Harrison (2L) and Olivia Fontana (2L), coached by Professor Yelena Duterte, advanced to the quarterfinals. Stetson’s John Arnett (2L) was awarded “Best Oralist” of the competition. Congratulations to our Consortium participants!
Jennifer Oliva, associate professor of law and public health at WVU, has been selected a Bellow Scholar by the Association of American Law Schools (AALS). The Bellow Scholar program recognizes and supports the research projects of clinical law teachers seeking to improve the quality of justice in communities, to enhance the delivery of legal services, and to promote economic and social justice. Oliva is the director of the Veterans Advocacy Law Clinic at WVU Law. She is conducting interdisciplinary research to help veterans released from prison return to society and lead productive lives. The Bellow Scholars program is named for the late Gary Bellow, a Harvard law professor who pioneered modern clinical legal education. Only four Bellow scholars were selected for the 2017-19 program.
